Here's some hits from the variety of gaming news in my inbox:
First up, Bethesda Softworks has finally released the PlayStation 3 version of the Dragonborn expansion for "Skyrim."
And it's 50 percent off ($9.99) during launch week.
This add-on takes players to the island of Solstheim, off the coast of Morrowind. "Encounter new towns, dungeons, and quests, as you traverse the ash wastes and glacial valleys of this new land. Become more powerful with shouts that bend the will of your enemies and even tame dragons. Your fate, and the fate of Solstheim, hangs in the balance as you face off against your deadliest adversary – the first Dragonborn."
Bethesda also promises that the Hearthfire and Dawnguard add-ons aren't far behind.
Second, Activision confirmed the "Call of Duty: Black Ops II" Revolution map pack will be available for PS3 and PC on Feb. 28.
It features four new multiplayer maps, including Hydro, set at a Pakistani hydroelectric plant; Grind, in a Venice Beach skatepark; Downhill, at an Alpine ski resort; and Mirage, in China's Gobi Desert.
More zombie content is also to be included. A new map "drops players inside a maze of crumbling skyscrapers amidst a ravaged Chinese city, where all-new Wonder Weaponry will play a crucial role." And the new mode "Turned" lets players play as zombies.
As a standalone purchase, Revolution will be $14.99. It's also included as part of the "Black Ops II" season pass, with is $49.99 and comes with several other map packs.
Capcom announced Tuesday that it will give away a game every weekday from now through the end of the year. The catch: You've got to be a somewhat active member of the Capcom-Unity community .
Capcom says, "Registered users will be able to log in, earn Unity Points and then spend those points on raffle tickets that put them in the running for a free game. This is all handled within the Dashboard, which also gives access to Capcom-Unity's forums, user blogs and media uploads.
"Unity Points can be earned simply by using the Capcom-Unity site; users can comment, write their own blogs, post in the forums and send in news tips to add to their total which thereby increases opportunities to enter the daily raffle. And while Capcom-Unity will primarily be featuring prize games from current gaming systems, they will occasionally dig deeper and offer older, sealed titles unearthed from the Capcom vault."
Demo out today
A demo of TECMO KOEI's "Dynasty Warriors 7 Empires" is now available for download for PlayStation 3 on PSN.
Wait? They're only up to No. 7? I'd swear a few thousand "Dynasty Warriors" games have been made. Anyway ...
The demo will include access to "edit mode," where players can customize their character — appearance, personality, weapon animations, etc. — and any characters created in the demo can be carried over to the final game, which will be released via PSN on Feb. 26.
As far as I can tell, the list of characters and boss battles they've sent appears to be what I remember from the original "Ninja Gaiden 2," so no actual surprises there.
This version will also include the "hero-style" nerf introduced in "Ninja Gaiden Sigma Plus" for Vita. Basically, when this mode is on, the player gets temporary advantages when at low health: auto-blocking, auto-evading, increased damage, higher chance for dismemberment.
