CHAMPAIGN – Betty R. "Becky" Coverdill, 89, of Champaign-Urbana, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend, was called home to God on Friday, Feb. 15, 2013.
Becky was born June 25, 1923, in Detroit, Mich., to the late Fred and Ethel Kagel. She was raised in Detroit and graduated from Denby High School in January 1942.
Becky graduated from the Burroughs Business School and went to work at Briggs Manufacturing.
As a young woman, Becky met her future husband while flying model airplanes with her brother Bud. She waited for his return from serving in World War II, and on May 1, 1946, Becky and Edward M. Coverdill were united in marriage. Together they raised five children, eventually settling in Beecher, Ill., after residing in Michigan, California and Park Forest, Ill. Her husband preceded her in death in 1976.
Becky was an aviation enthusiast - from flying model airplanes to watching the Blue Angels - and was very proud of soloing in her husband's Piper Cherokee 140. She was an accomplished organist and loved playing her Lowry organ in the family home.
Her kids will remember her wicked ping-pong shots and pool shooting skills, which often resulted in their allowance changing hands. She delighted in games of Uno and Skip-Bo with family members. Her macaroni and cheese, chicken and cornbread, and banana cream pies will always be fond memories.
Becky was a talented seamstress and quilter; her many handmade quilts are treasured by her family. She was a passionate Illini fan, with special fondness for the men's basketball team.
Becky was past-president of the Amvets Auxiliary Post 67 in Beecher, and served as a volunteer at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana for nearly 20 years. For the past four years, Becky has resided at the Champaign County Nursing Home, where she served as president of the Resident's Council. She is surely now head of God's angel corps.
Above all, Becky truly loved and cherished her family. She is survived by her loving children, Joy (Robert) Burns of Davison, Mich., Jill Coverdill of Traverse City, Mich., Robert (Celeste) Coverdill of Savoy, Amy (Robert) Morgan of Champaign and James (Nathalie) Coverdill of Athens, Ga. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren, William (Sarah) Burns of Ann Arbor, Mich., Kevin Burns of Flushing, Mich., Andrew (special friend, Emily) Coverdill of Arlington, Va., Emma Coverdill of Savoy, Michael (Heather) Bernard of Milwaukee, Wis., Sara Stephenson of Champaign and Patrick Coverdill of Athens, Ga; and her beloved four great-grandchildren, Finley, Wiley, Logan and Landon.
Becky leaves behind her best friend of over 80 years, Bernice Mahaffy Buit of Clarkston, Mich.; dear friend, Ruth Kelsey of Champaign-Urbana; and her only brother, Fred (Bud) Kagel of Fraser, Mich.
Becky's family sincerely thanks the nursing caregivers and volunteers from Carle Hospice for the friendship, love and support extended to Becky during the past year; the nursing staff on North Tower 4 at Carle Foundation Hospital for their compassionate care during her last days; and all the Champaign County Nursing Home staff who provided care and support during the time she lived there. You have all made this journey much easier for Becky and her family.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, at Morgan Memorial Home in Savoy. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 18, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Champaign.
Becky will be laid to rest near her husband at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield in a private family service. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.
