CHAMPAIGN – Dorothy J. Walker, 87, of Champaign died at 6:25 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 16, 2013) at the Champaign County Nursing Home.
Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, at Meadowbrook Community Church, 1902 S. Duncan Road, Champaign. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. with Pastor Ron Strack officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Gardens, Champaign.
Dorothy was born Feb. 2, 1926, in South Bend, Ind. She was the daughter of Earl and Irene (Antrim) Norwood.
Dorothy married Harold L. Walker on Oct. 27, 1942, in South Bend. He passed away Jan. 3, 2000, in Champaign.
Dorothy is survived by daughters, Diana Walker Whitt of Champaign and Nancy Walker (Leonard) Seward of Pesotum; son, John (Mary Beth) Walker of Chandler, Ariz.; a brother, Charles (Dorothy) Norwood of Casa Grande, Ariz.; a grandson, Todd (Debbie Bosch) Whitt of Savoy; two granddaughters, Emily and Sarah Walker of Chandler, Ariz.; a great-grandson, Cade Whitt of Savoy; a step-granddaughter, Monica Rodriguez of Savoy; step-families, Len (Iwona Rogala) Seward, Len III, Colin, Cody, Hayley and Olivia of Oakbrook Terrace and St. Joseph; Deanna (Bob) Mool, Annelise, Samantha and Allison of Sherman; and Shari (Jeff) Lintner, Sharon Rose and Michael of Blaine, Wash. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and their families in Arizona, Indiana and New Jersey.
She was also preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Eileen and Kathryn, mother and father-in-laws, two sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law, two nephews and one niece.
Dorothy began her working career as a telephone switchboard operator at Bendix Corp. in South Bend during the 1940s. Later, in Champaign she was a receptionist for WCIA Channel 3 TV and Champaign Unit Four schools. Dorothy retired from Unit Four in 1983.
Dorothy was an active member of P.T.A., Champaign County Chapter Retired Education Office Personnel and Retired Senior Volunteer Program (R.S.V.P.), holding various positions in these organizations. She enjoyed being an R.S.V.P. Pen Pal with elementary students and working with other seniors in the Food for Seniors program.
She attended Meadowbrook Community Church.
Dorothy was an avid reader and gardener. She loved flowers, especially her roses.
Dorothy was loved by many. She never met a stranger, welcoming everyone with her warm smile. She was very giving of herself, always an encouraging and loving mother. She will be deeply missed by her children and family.
Dorothy's children would like to thank the entire staff of the Champaign County Nursing Home for their dedicated care and kindness provided to their mother these last few years. The staff's support and guidance to her children did not go unnoticed and was greatly appreciated.
