CHAMPAIGN — Xavier Martin hit two free throws with 14 seconds left and Champaign Central survived a 15-foot shot attempt by Danville at the end to pull out a 57-55 Big 12 victory Friday night at Combes Gym.
“I thought we defended it pretty well,” Maroons coach Scott Davis said.
Martin finished with a double-double (11 points, 16 rebounds), and Isiah Smith led an ultra-balanced Central attack with 12 points. Five Maroons contributed at least six points.
“I think our defensive intensity was pretty good, and I think our ability to not settle for threes (was important),” Davis said. “I thought we did a pretty good job of attacking the basket.”
Steven Williams and Denzel Smith scored 12 points apiece for the Vikings.
The Maroons bolted to a 16-4 lead after one quarter, but Danville rallied to within one point by halftime.
Normal Community 53, Urbana 45. The Tigers fell behind 20-8 after one quarter and could not recover in a road loss to the Big 12-leading Ironmen.
