DANVILLE — Danville Area Community College trustees will vote Tuesday on whether to upgrade the campuswide phone system.
Officials said the upgrade, which would cost $83,306, would allow them to install new phones in about 80 classrooms, which instructors could use in case of an emergency situation.
"That occasionally happens," administrative services Director Mike Cunningham said, adding past incidents have been medically related.
He said although most people carry cellphones, the classroom phones would ensure that if someone needed help most anywhere on campus, the call could be made.
"We're just covering our bases," he said.
The trustees will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Room 302 or Vermilion Hall on campus, 2000 E. Main St. A copy of the agenda and board packet is available online at http://bit.ly/Yj6Xf4 .
Cunningham is recommending that trustees approve a contract with Midwest Communications Group for the upgrade and installation. He said software upgrades and replacement parts for the current system are no longer available.
Cunningham said staff members will be able to use their existing phone and voice-mail system, which will save money.
Internally, staff members will have to dial a four-digit number instead of a three-digit one to connect to another phone on campus. But "externally, when you call, it's the same number," he said.
Cunningham said the new system also has some features that the old one doesn't. For example, people can set up incoming calls on their campus phone to ring to their cellphone if they want.
Trustees will also vote Tuesday on buying $163,116 worth of new computer equipment from GovConnection. The Dakota Dunes, S.D., firm offered the lowest of six bids.
