URBANA — An Urbana woman who allegedly robbed a pizza delivery man at gunpoint Sunday night is in the Champaign County Jail.
Urbana police Lt. Bryant Seraphin said officers were called at 10:30 p.m. to 904 N. Broadway Ave., U, where a 26-year-old delivery man for Rosati's Pizza said he had been robbed in a hallway inside the apartment building.
Seraphin said the description of the robber was put out as a short man wearing dark clothing, a bandanna covering the face, and black paint on the exposed portion of the face.
Seraphin said as Officer Darrin McCartney arrived, he saw a car speeding out of the parking lot of the apartment complex that made an abrupt left turn onto Franklin Street, a dead end. McCartney stopped the car and he and other officers questioned the two men and two women inside.
As they gathered information from the group, Kristianna Payne, 19, who listed an address in the 1300 block of Silver Street, gave police a cellphone number that was the same number that had placed the order for the food delivery.
In addition, Seraphin said, officers noticed that her face was smudged with what appeared to be black paint.
Officers learned what apartment she had been in at the 904 N. Broadway address and got permission to search it. They found a Rosati's bag, chicken wings and money taken from the delivery man.
Payne was arrested as was Jack E. Cardwell, 20, who listed addresses in the 4800 block of West Windsor Road, Champaign, and the 1300 block of Eastern Avenue, Urbana, because he had money on him that had been taken in the robbery.
Seraphin said it appeared Cardwell was involved in planning the holdup and was present when it happened but was not the one holding the gun.
Police did not recover the gun, Seraphin said, but Payne told them it was an air gun.
On Monday, Payne and Carwell were each charged with armed robbery and aggravated robbery. The latter charge implies that a handgun was used. Cardwell was also charged with obstructing justice.
Judge Richard Klaus set their bond at $100,000 each and told them to be back in court April 23.
