I know I can't be the only person who forgets a food item at the back of her fridge and then wonders what the heck that smell is.
This morning, I rediscovered such an item and Rob disposed of it in our outside trash can. But, it was too late. A terrible smell wafted through our kitchen. And because our house is small, I knew it wouldn't be long before the whole place stank.
I feel like I've been seeing stove-top air freshening ideas on Pinterest forever, but I'd never tried the strategy, until today. Something had to be done.
So, I took an orange peel (other versions of this idea use lemon peel, but we didn't have any) and covered it with water in a saucepan. Then I added some whole cloves, dried rosemary leaves (again, we didn't have fresh) and a few drops of lavender essential oil. I put the whole thing to simmer on the stovetop, and it helped as soon as it warmed up.
I turned the burner off when I left for work, but I'm definitely going to add more water - and maybe vanilla - and heat it up again when I get home.
It was a simple way of making our kitchen smell much, much better. I may even make it again, even when my house isn't totally stinky.
