CHAMPAIGN – Harriet Catherine (Murphy) Ryan, 99, of Champaign passed away on Monday (Feb. 25, 2013) at the Champaign County Nursing Home, Urbana.
She was born on May 26, 1913, in Champaign, to Carl and Maude Murphy.
Survivors include one son, William (Ethel) Lyon of Broomall, Pa.; two grandsons, John (Sandy) Lyon and Jim Lyon; two great-grandsons, Evan and Josh Lyon, all of Broomall, Pa.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Robert Carl Murphy; and husbands, Clyde Lyon and John Ryan.
She began working at the University of Illinois Library at Champaign-Urbana in the shipping department on Dec. 3, 1951, and retired as chief library clerk in the circulation department on Aug. 31, 1978.
On Nov. 26, 1961, Mrs. Ryan was installed as worthy matron of the Vesper Chapter 128, Order of the Eastern Star of Illinois.
She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be missed not only by her family but by many devoted friends throughout the community, as well as those students with whom she worked and advised at the UI Library. Some students continued to keep in contact with her long after they had graduated.
Among her interests were people, music, dancing and traveling.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Champaign.
Entombment services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, March 1, at Mount Hope Mausoleum.
