URBANA — A Champaign man who pleaded guilty to not having a valid firearm owner's identification card following his arrest a year ago for allegedly shooting a dog in the leg will be sentenced next month.
Joshua Ingersoll, 33, who listed an address in the 2700 block of Arden Drive, pleaded guilty last week before Judge Mike Jones to that misdemeanor offense. He faces a maximum penalty of up to a year in the county jail when he's sentenced April 22.
Champaign police were called by a veterinarian who treated Ingersoll's dog for a gunshot wound to the leg. Police then arrested Ingersoll at his home on Jan. 28, 2012.
Assistant State's Attorney Chris Kanis said Ingersoll, who police said was intoxicated, had five guns in his home but an expired FOID.
Kanis said he dismissed felony charges of aggravated cruelty to animals and reckless discharge of a firearm against Ingersoll because Ingersoll's girlfriend told police that she shot the dog and was prepared to testify to that.
Kanis said Ingersoll was initially charged with the crime because he had told the vet that night that the dog was shot while hunting, but Kanis said the dog was not a hunting dog but a small terrier.
Kanis said Ingersoll and the girlfriend gave the dog up for adoption and it recovered from its injury.

she admitted to the incident and got a pass?....and he's charged with an expired FOID when criminals who have never had a FOID aren't... .makes sense...NOT...
What happened to the dog? Does this man still have the dog? I hope not!
Snipe season last year ran from Sept. 8 to Dec. 23 so they would have been out of season.
