URBANA — University of Illinois students are hoping to help the American Red Cross raise money to vaccinate more children in developing countries against measles.
The UI American Red Cross Club will continue selling measles buttons on the UI Quad from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. through Friday for $1 each.
The club hopes to sell 450 buttons, enough to vaccinate 450 people at about $1 each, said Kelly Formoso, Red Cross Champaign branch manager.
Formoso said measles kills, on average, 450 people a day worldwide even though there's an effective vaccine available.
The money is being raised for the Measles & Rubella Initiative, a partnership of the American Red Cross, the United Nations Foundation, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, UNICEF and the World Health Organization bringing measles vaccinations to developing countries.
