The students represented in the 2012-2013 Cultivating Creativity: Consolidated Communications Children's Art Exhibition were recognized for their achievement at an awards reception held on March 10 at the Tarble Arts Center at Eastern Illinois University.
Local students who were recognized include Keli Adkisson, Tuscola Community High School, Chloe Alexander, Arthur Grade School, Emily Bacino-Althaus, St. John's Lutheran School, Alexia Guajardo, Arcola Elementary School, Kayle Karmazinas, Arcola High School and Isa- bel Magee, Oakland High School.
Each student represented in the exhibition was awarded a $50 check, provided by Consolidated Communications. Participating art teachers were also awarded with a $50 donation from Consolidated Communications for each school involved in the exhibition in support for school art programs.
The Exchange Club of Urbana named Urbana High School student Mary Cate Hummel as its March Youth of the Month.
The Exchange Club of Urbana recognizes a student each month during the school year from whom a Youth of the Year will be named. The local Youth of the Year can compete for the Lincolnland District Exchange Club's District Youth of the Year.
Exchange Club is a national service organization with an emphasis on child abuse prevention. The Exchange Club of Urbana meets at noon each Thursday at Clark-Lindsey, Urbana.
Students who are 4-H members in Ford and Iroquois counties and are graduating from high school this spring may be eligible to apply for a 4-H Scholarship.
Those who are continuing their education at a four-year college or university, junior college or a trade school as a freshman in the fall of 2013 can apply for one of four $750 scholarships.
Applicants must have been a 4-H member in a Ford or Iroquois County 4-H club for the past five years, including the current 4-H year, and have exhibited in last year's 4-H Show.
Application packets are available upon request from University of Illinois Extension, Ford-Iroquois office. You can request one by calling 815-268-4051 or emailing Jen Odle at firstname.lastname@example.org . High school seniors will not automatically receive this information in the mail.
Requested scholarship applications will be mailed to all interested seniors on April 1.
Completed application forms, including a short essay, two letters of recommendation and current high school transcript, must be returned to the Ford-Iroquois Extension office by Monday, April 15.
Individual interviews with each potential candidate will be held toward the end of April.
Sophia Liu, who attends Countryside School in Champaign, recently won an award for her poster in the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency's 26th annual Poster, Poetry and Prose Contest.
She was among a group of fifth- and sixth-grade winners.
The contest's theme this year was "Lending a Hand to Protect Our Precious Land."
The writers and artists selected from throughout Illinois were recognized at a reception in the Old State Capitol in downtown Springfield.
