MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — A dominant performance by Alina Weinstein on Saturday night propelled the Illinois women’s gymnastics team to its third NCAA Championships appearance in program history.
With Weinstein winning the balance beam, floor exercise and all-around, the Illini placed second to earn one of the Morgantown Regional’s two berths at nationals. Illinois totaled 196.025 points to edge reigning Big Ten champion Nebraska by 0.15 point.
The Illini previously advanced to the NCAAs in 2009 and 2011.
On Friday, Weinstein was named a regular season All-American by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women. Weinstein earned first-team honors in floor exercise and second team in the all-around.
In men’s gymnastics:
Freshman reigns. Illini freshman Fred Hartville captured the vault title at the Big Ten event finals at Minneapolis. Hartville scored a 15.425 to repeat his first-place performance Friday night in the Big Ten team finals.
In men’s golf:
Detry in range. The Illini shot a 25-over-par 601 in the first two rounds of the Insperity Augusta State Invitational and stand 13th in the 15-team field entering today’s final 18 holes at Augusta, Ga. UI freshman Thomas Detry was tied for 14th at 145 — 5 strokes off the lead.
Illini can’t slow Indiana. The Illini went 1 for 6 with runners in scoring position and lost to streaking Big Ten leader Indiana 7-3 at Bloomington, Ind. The No. 16 Hoosiers (25-3, 8-0) — who went 5 for 12 with runners in scoring position — won their 18th game in a row. It’s the longest winning streak this season in Division I college baseball. Illinois (18-9, 1-4) scored all of its runs on homers by Thomas Lindauer and Brandon Hohl.
Bauch foils no-hitter. The Illini avoided a second straight no-hit defeat when freshman Allie Bauch singled in the fifth inning of an 8-0 loss to Northwestern at Evanston. Illinois (11-20, 1-7 Big Ten) lost for the eighth time in its last nine games.
In women’s track & field:
Spencer captures 800. Illini junior Ahlivia Spencer won the 800 meters at the Sun Angel Classic at Tempe, Ariz. Spencer finished in 2 minutes, 7.32 seconds to edge runner-up Alisha Brown of Cal Riverside by 0.54 second.
In men’s track & field:
Illini rack up wins. The Illini won four events at the Tiger Track Classic at Auburn, Ala. The 1,600 relay unit of DJ Zahn, Cam Viney, Juan Green and Stephon Pamilton placed first by almost four seconds. Other UI winners were Jannis Topfer (3,000 steeplechase), Ian Barnett (5,000) and Ryan Lynn (800).
In men’s tennis:
Hoh still on roll. Stephen Hoh won his sixth straight singles match, but the Illini dropped the other five singles matches and fell to Michigan 5-2 at Ann Arbor, Mich. Hoh outbattled 98th-ranked Vlad Stefan in three sets at No. 4 singles.
Illinois (11-8, 4-2 Big Ten) captured the doubles point, highlighted by an 8-6 triumph by the 22nd-ranked duo of Tim Kopinski and Ross Guignon against Michigan’s 12th-ranked tandem of Evan King and Shaun Bernstein.
In women’s tennis:
Win streak ends. Misia Kedzierski won at No. 5 singles to account for the Illini’s point in a 6-1 loss to No. 8 Michigan at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex. Illinois (9-9, 2-4 Big Ten) had a three-match winning streak snapped.
