GIBSON CITY — Council members approved a new ordinance that provides a method for charitable organizations to meet state license requirements for raffles.
City Attorney Marc Miller of Champaign said the new ordinance "just reflects state law."
Initial objections centered on having an ordinance that was unenforceable or questioning why the action wasn't left to a broader-based government like the county.
Alderman John Carlson cast the only no vote in the 5-1 vote in favor of the new ordinance.
The ordinance goes into effect immediately. One-page forms are available at city hall and there is no fee for the license.
The license will cover raffle ticket sales within the city limits only. Organizations may need additional licenses if they sell in multiple areas with similar ordinances, Miller said.
Organizations that offer multiple raffles in a season, such as school booster clubs, need only register one time each year.
