Kim Berres won the balance beam (9.675), finished second in the vault (9.625) and was third in the floor exercise (9.825) to lead the Illinois women's gymnastics team past Michigan State and Northern Illinois in its home opener Saturday at Huff Hall.
The Illini edged the Spartans 191.8-191.75.
Freshman Gina Wiechmann was second in the uneven bars and second in the all-around to boost the Illini, 3-1. Kelli Farrar was second in the beam.
In men's gymnastics: Romagnoli shines.
Travis Romagnoli won the all-around (57.25), the vault (9.65) and the parallel bars (9.8) in the UI's loss at Ohio State.
Romagnoli also finished second in the rings and tied teammate Jon Corbitt for second in the high bar. Yuval Ayalon won the pommel horse at 9.7.
In men's track: Illini quick to act.
Sprinters highlighted the UI's effort at Saturday's Missouri Indoor Invitational in Columbia, Mo.
The winners: Sherman Armstrong (22.17 seconds in the 200 meters), Matt Klima (48.81, 400), Tyrone Jones (1:13.64, 600) and Randy Gillon (career-best 7.55, 55 hurdles).
Bobby True won the 1,000 in 2:23.46, missing Marko Koers' school record by 0.06.
Justin Norberg won the pole vault at 15 feet, 91/4 inches.
In men's tennis: Three Illini advance.
Matt Snyder, Jeff Laski and Oliver Freelove advanced to the round of 16 with wins Saturday at the Big Ten Singles Championship in East Lansing, Mich.
Losers by upset were No. 3 seed and defending champion Gavin Sontag and No. 5 seed Cary Franklin.
