Well, spring is finally here, and as I write this, April showers are abundant. This weekend is Roger Ebert's Film Festival, and next weekend is the Christie Clinic Illinois Marathon. Both bring thousands of people to the twin cities.
The spring sale at the Gurnee Antique Center is April 26-28. It is at least a three-hour drive, but it is all interstate and well worth the time.
The sale runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 26 and 27 and noon to 5 p.m. April 28 at the center, 5742 Northridge Drive.
Going north, you can see the store from Interstate 94 just north of the Six Flags amusement park. Exit at Grand Avenue east, then right on Dilleys Road, which becomes Northridge at the antique center.
You can find more information by calling 847-782-9094 or visiting http://www.gurneeantiquecenter.com . This is one of the nicest antique stores in Illinois; you will not regret the trip.
The sale of library reference card file cabinets from the University of Illinois Main Library is in its sixth week at the Preservation and Conservation Association warehouse — and it's going well.
Workers have gone through the old waiting list, which was almost 5 years old, and just started the new list, which is more than 125 names. As of now, we will not add any more names — so if you are on that new list, keep your fingers crossed.
PACA soon will have some decorative bricks for sale along with some old school furniture.
Let the bidding begin
May starts the garage sale season — and also welcomes the outdoor shows. Spring and summer always offer more opportunities for those of us who go antique shopping.
The only areas that seem to be suffering are online auctions. Recent stories in antique publications say that 30 percent to 35 percent of the winning bids never materialize.
You still cannot beat seeing your quest, picking it up and looking it over and paying for it.
