CHAMPAIGN — The University YMCA's Dump & Run environmental recycling program will take contributions starting Monday.
Working with the University of Illinois and International Student and Scholar Services, the Y's collections will begin May 6.
Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 6 to 8; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 9; and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 10 and 11 and 13 to 17. More information is available at http://www.universityymca.org/dumpandrun .
The University Y has done Dump & Run for 11 years. It collects reusable items, which students would otherwise dispose of as they move out, and then sells the collected items at its annual garage sale in late August.
The project is meant to reduce litter and consumer waste, save space in landfills, lower dumping costs for certified housing units, provide inexpensive items for students to purchase in the fall, and act as a fundraiser for the University Y.
The Y does not collect stoves, washers, dryers, non-working electronics and computers or parts, sleeper sofas, mattresses or large exercise equipment.
It will only accept clothing in nearly new condition.
The group will accept furniture, working electronics, backpacks, bicycles, school supplies, jewelry, winter clothing, shoes, kitchen appliances, glassware, CDs/records (vinyl), books, working computers, artwork, toys, sporting equipment, nonperishable food items, toiletries, lawn and garden items and other household goods.
