URBANA — A husband and wife accused of stealing from a truck in a department store parking lot have been charged with burglary.
Jeremy Larson, 26, and Ashlee Larson, 22, who listed an address in the 1300 block of Comanche Drive, Champaign, appeared in Champaign County Circuit Court Wednesday.
A Champaign police report said about 5:50 p.m. Tuesday, patrol officers saw a car circling the parking lot at the Kohl's store on Convenience Center Road, then pull up beside a truck. The officer saw Jeremy Larson get out and look inside the truck then reach inside a partially opened window and unlock the truck door.
Jeremy Larson removed an item, which activated the truck's alarm system. The officer saw Larson jump back in his car and take off.
The officer stopped the car nearby and saw a white cell phone on the dash of the Larsons' car. Ashlee Larson was a passenger in the car.
Officers found the truck owner, who told them the only item missing from the truck was her phone. She provided her number and when the officer called it, the phone in the Larsons' car rang.
Assistant State's Attorney Scott Bennett said Jeremy Larson admitted taking the phone and also admitted being involved in numerous other motor vehicle burglaries in the Champaign area. Ashlee Larson told police she was present with her husband during at least three of the burglaries.
Judge Richard Klaus set bond for Jeremy Larson, who is on probation for harassment by electronic communications, at $25,000, while Ashlee Larson was released on her own recognizance. Both were told to be back in court June 18.
Bennett said Jeremy Larson also has prior convictions for retail theft, intimidation, and endangering the life of a child, while Ashlee Larson has prior convictions for possession of drug paraphernalia and retail theft.
