A look at Saturday's prep highlights involving area teams.
■ Bloomington 6-4, Centennial 3-2. The host Chargers had eight strikeouts from JEFF LAVIN and two hits from ZACH PARKS in the first-game loss. Parks was 1 for 3 in the second-game defeat and JEFF LINDGREN had six strikeouts.
■ Normal Community 5-6, Champaign Central 4-2. The visiting Maroons received six solid innings from ZACH DORNER along with two hits and an RBI from LUKE BEESLEY, but Normal Community scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to earn the win in the first game of a Big 12 doubleheader. CONNOR MAPES and JAKE SNIDER each had two hits and an RBI in the second game, which only went six innings because of rain.
■ Paxton-Buckley-Loda 2-6, Watseka 1-13. A well-placed bunt by KYLER SWANSON scored MARTIN MENNENGA from third base in the bottom of the eighth inning of Game 1 to give the host Panthers a walkoff win. Mennenga was 2 for 4 while DREW SCHRODT was 2 for 3 and struck out eight in throwing all eight innings for PBL. KEANON LaVOIE struck out eight for Watseka. In the second game, BROCK MYERS (2 for 4, four RBI) and CODY SCOTT (3 for 4, two RBI) sparked the Warriors. PAYTON DUDELY had two hits and AXL DENAULT drove in a run for the Panthers.
■ St. Joseph-Ogden 7, Argenta-Oreana 2. AARON WOLLER drove in four runs on two hits to lead the host Spartans in a rain-shortened five-inning win. TYLER McCORMICK struck out six and HUNTER HART added a home run for SJ-O.
■ St. Thomas More 9-7, Clifton Central 3-6. LUC BEQUETTE was 3 for 4 with four RBI and picked up the win to lead the Sabers in the first game. SEAN SULLIVAN was 2 for 4 with two RBI and pitched three innings of scoreless relief and STORM JOOP was 2 for 3 with an RBI for STM. Joop was 4 for 4 with two doubles and three RBI in the second game while MIKE PLECKI added three hits, including two doubles, and scored three runs.
In girls’ soccer
■ Centennial 6, Herscher 1. The Chargers capitalized on four goals and an assist by DAGNY OLSON to cruise to the nonconference road win. KATELYNN MARTINEZ added the other two goals and assisted on three of Olson’s goals. CHANTAL MEACHAM and SARA REGAN also had assists for Centennial.
■ Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin 3, St. Thomas More 1. JADE BRINKOETTER evened the match with an early second-half goal, but the host Cyclones scored twice in the final 15 minutes to prevail. The match was a late addition to the schedule after inclement weather canceled the Quincy Notre Dame Tournament STM was supposed to play in.
■ Bloomington 11-24, Centennial 1-6. MAKENA BRILLHART had the Chargers’ lone RBI in the first game, which lasted five innings. BEKAH BAMERT was 2 for 4 with an RBI while BRIANNA PERRY was 1 for 2 with two RBI in the second game for Centennial.
■ Clifton Central 8-4, St. Thomas More 6-2. ALEESHA ROESSLER had two hits and an RBI for the Sabers in the first game while ALEX ROESSLER had a double and an RBI. ALYSSA VODACEK added two hits and LEAH ALLISON struck out eight. BROOKE PLOTNER drove in both runs for St. Thomas More in the second game while Vodacek and TAYLOR DURING each had two hits.
■ Watseka 5-4, Hoopeston Area 1-15. TAYLOR BAUER struck out nine and had two hits to pace the host Warriors in the first game. MARIAH CARROLL was 3 for 4, including a double, with an RBI while DANIELLE SHUPER drove in a run for Watseka. RYLEE MARTIN, JORDAN McFADDEN and BRITTANY MYERS each had a hit for the Cornjerkers. In Game 2, Myers was 4 for 4 with three RBI to lead Hoopeston Area and AALYIAH COLUNGA was 2 for 2 with three RBI. KATIE McTAGGART was 2 for 3 with a home run while Carroll was also 2 for 3 for the Warriors.
■ At Lockport. Centennial finished second in the 16-team tournament, losing 3-2 to Downers Grove North in the title match. The No. 2 doubles team of PETER KIM and ANDREW SCAGGS went unbeaten to lead the Chargers.
