A kitchen fire late Tuesday afternoon in Champaign caused an estimated $25,000 damage to a home and $10,000 to its contents. No injuries were reported.

CHAMPAIGN — A kitchen fire late Tuesday afternoon in Champaign caused an estimated $25,000 damage to a home and $10,000 to its contents.
Nobody was reported hurt.
According to a fire department report, firefighters were called to a bi-level, single family home at 2313 Blackthorn Drive, Champaign, at 4:32 p.m. Tuesday after one of the occupants tried to put out an oven fire with an extinguisher.
The occupants, listed as Dennis and Janna Birge and three children, all left the home prior to calling 911.
When firefighters arrived, they found thick smoke in the upper floor. They found the fire in the kitchen on the upper floor and extinguished it.
Fire crews ventilated the house with a fan to clear out the smoke and to make sure the fire did not extend to other areas of the home.
Firefighters had the fire out by 4:46 p.m., according to the report.
Champaign firefighters were still investigating the cause on Tuesday evening.
