URBANA — An Urbana man who admitted taking part in a mugging in north Urbana almost two years ago has been sentenced to four years in prison.
Douglas Cooper, 24, whose last known address was in the 900 block of North Harvey Street, was given credit on his sentence for having already served about a year and seven months. Judge Harry Clem also agreed to let Cooper remain free until June 4, when he has to begin serving the remainder of his sentence.
Cooper pleaded guilty Tuesday before Clem to unlawful use of weapons in connection with the Aug. 5, 2011 holdup of a man near Fairview Avenue and Harvey Street. Two other men were also arrested for allegedly taking cash from a man on a bike.
An Urbana police report said police arrested Cooper that same day not far from his home and found a loaded .38-caliber handgun on him.
In exchange for his plea to that count, another count of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance (about 2.5 grams of crack cocaine) was dismissed.
Cooper was on parole at the time of his arrest for a 2009 aggravated driving under the influence conviction. He also had a burglary conviction from 2006.
