DANVILLE — Barbara Stover has been named the 2012-2013 Danville Public Library Foundation Volunteer of the Year.
Stover started volunteering for the library's outreach department in 1987 after she retired as an English and speech teacher at Danville Area Community College in 1985.
According to a release from the foundation, during her 26 years as a volunteer, Stover has helped hundreds of people in the community. Her broad knowledge of reading genres has enabled her to assist visually impaired patrons with the selection of items from the recorded books collection.
"Barb's smile and kind nature make people not only feel welcome, but makes them feel at home," said outreach department director Mary Jane Starnes, who nominated Stover. "She has cheerfully and diligently volunteered, often on a weekly basis, to process and shelve books and materials for the outreach department. The last few years, she has helped with registering people for the library hosted VIPIO Low Vision Fair for which she has also created name tags and served as a greeter."
