Best season in program history ends with loss to Alabama in NCAA title match
MILTON, Ga. — A day after knocking off top-ranked Cal to advance to the NCAA title match, the Illinois golf team didn't have enough magic on Sunday against second-ranked Alabama, falling 4-1 in its quest for the program's first national championship.
Alabama's third-ranked Bobby Wyatt got the Crimson Tide on the board early with a 6 and 5 win against Thomas Detry. Illinois' Charlie Danielson was all square with Trey Mullinax going to the 18th hole, but Mullinax made par to win the hole for Alabama's second point.
In the only other match completed, fourth-ranked Cory Whitsett defeated Illinois' Alex Burge 4 and 3 to clinch the Crimson Tide's first national championship.
Illinois junior Thomas Pieters, who will skip his senior season to turn pro, defeated Justin Thomas 1-up for the lone Illini point.
In the other match, Alabama's Scott Strohmeyer defeated Brian Campbell 3 and 2.
Illinois will return four of its top five players next season.
