ROBERTS — The village board has accepted an $838,500 bid for the replacement of 11,000 feet of aging water mains.
The bid from Hammond-based Universal Mechanical was the lowest of seven submitted for the project, which is targeted to begin in September, village President Rick Flessner said.
The bid was $70,000 below an engineer's estimate. Flessner said the cost will be covered entirely by a $950,000 low-interest loan awarded to the village in May by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.
The loan will be paid back over a 20-year period — with 1.95 percent interest — through the village's water service fees, which have been increased in recent years in anticipation of borrowing the funds, Flessner said.
Flessner said that with the new water mains being installed, he hopes the village can avoid raising water rates again for many more years. The base-usage rate is now $40 per month.
