URBANA — A man who was convicted in his absence in April of trying to break into cars was present Wednesday to be sentenced to prison.
A Champaign County jury convicted Wesley D. Hedrick, 24, whose last known address was in the 400 block of East White Street, Champaign, of attempted burglary.
Hedrick was found guilty of trying to get in cars in the 500 block of East Clark Street in Champaign on Dec. 15.
He was present on April 23 when a jury was picked to hear his case but didn't return to the courthouse after a lunch break. Judge Harry Clem then continued the case until April 26 but when Hedrick didn't show, he ordered that the case go forward without Hedrick there.
On Wednesday, Clem sentenced Hedrick to five years in prison.
Court records show Hedrick has prior criminal convictions for aggravated battery and burglary.
