Illinois men’s golf coach Mike Small was selected to the Illinois Golf Hall of Fame.
GLENVIEW — Illinois men’s golf coach Mike Small was selected to the Illinois Golf Hall of Fame, the Illinois PGA Foundation announced Monday.
Small, the most successful player in Illinois PGA history, was chosen along with nine-time PGA Tour winner Jay Haas and seven-time U.S. Open qualifier Bob Harris.
The 2013 class of inductees will be honored Oct. 25 at the Illinois Golf Hall of Fame exhibit at The Glen Club in Glenview.
Small is the only player to win the Illinois PGA Championship and Illinois Open Championship in the same year, a feat he accomplished four times.
In 2007, he won the first three of the Illinois PGA’s four major championships, skipping the final major of the season — the Illinois PGA Player’s Championship — due to scheduling conflicts with his Illini coaching duties.
Nationally, Small has won the PGA Professional National Championship three times and is a three-time PGA of America Player of the Year. The former Illini player also is a four-time member of the United States PGA Cup team.
Small, who turned pro in 1990 and went on to compete on the PGA Tour, has played in eight PGA Championships and three U.S. Opens.
