CHAMPAIGN — No one was injured when an Effingham man lost control of his car on Interstate 57 near a Champaign construction zone Friday morning, causing a traffic backup for a while.
The accident happened at 10:45 a.m. near the Curtis Road exit, Illinois State Police at Pesotum said.
Steven R. Kruse, 33, was driving north when he left the road, went through the center median and hit the inside concrete bridge rail on the southbound side. His car came to rest in the left lane on the southbound side.
About that time, a sport utility vehicle headed south came upon the car and swerved to avoid hitting it. Kimberly S. Zahrn, 49, of Fisher, ended up hitting a construction barricade sign. She came to rest on the inside shoulder on the southbound side.
Kruse had a 7-year-old with him who was not wearing a seat belt. Both of them remained in the car and both refused medical treatment.
Kruse was ticketed for improper lane usage and failure to secure a child in a child restraint system.
