As you're out celebrating America's birthday this week, local fire officials want to make sure you stay safe.
Both the Champaign and Urbana Fire Departments report that most fireworks are illegal in both cities, and if you have to light a wick or a stem that causes an item to explode or fly into the air, it's not permitted. However, novelty fireworks, such as snakes, glow worms, sparklers and pellets, are legal in Champaign and Urbana.
Urbana Fire Marshal Phil Edwards said even though novelty fireworks are legal, he wouldn't recommend them because they can heat up to 1,500 degrees.
Edwards added that some people use illegal fireworks anyway, but when people ask him how to use them safely, he says the only way to do that is to not use them at all.
Fireworks in Champaign are scheduled to be set off at around 9:15 on Thursday night at the E-14 lot west of the State Farm Center.
