Staff writer Matt Daniels breaks down the chances of the five Illini who could leave with an oversized check at the state’s first PGA Tour event in 2013.
Class of 2004
Status report: The Crystal Lake Central product who arrived at Illinois after transferring from Minnesota is coming off one of his best Web.com Tour performances. Affrunti found himself in a four-man playoff for the title at the United Leasing Championship on June 30 in Newburgh, Ind. Affrunti didn’t win the playoff but did manage to earn the most money ($44,800) in any of the 12 tournaments he has played this season. A large majority of those tournaments (10) have come on the Web.com Tour. Affrunti did make the cut in the two PGA events he played in June. He tied for 47th at the FedEx St. Jude Classic on June 9 in Memphis, Tenn., and tied for 77th at the Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Conn., on June 23.
Deere tracking: The 31-year-old will compete in his third John Deere Classic and first since 2010 this week. Affrunti has never made the cut in his two previous stops at TPC Deere Run. He shot 3 under in 2010 but missed the cut by 1 stroke. Affrunti made his PGA Tour debut at the 2004 event, where he shot 2-over par in his two rounds.
Outlook: Just making the cut would be a victory for Affrunti. He has done that so far in 2013, so if he keeps up his steady golf, he could leave the John Deere Classic for the first time with a paycheck.
