VILLA GROVE — Superintendent Mary Ann Manos is asking for community support with an application for a federal grant program that assists school districts with construction and curriculum projects.
The Qualified Zone Academy Bonds grant is available to all school districts with an enrollment of more than 35 percent reduced or free lunch student recipients. The grant has a 10 percent gift-in-kind requirement.
Manos is asking for a letter of support from community members who would be able to sponsor a career-related field trip or internship. A wide range of industries and employment options qualify as a career exploration opportunity for high school and middle school students in the district, which currently does not offer such a program.
The deadline for the grant application is July 27.
In other business, the school board has set athletic and instructional fees for next school year. An athletic fee of $50 will be charged for each sport, with a $100 individual maximum. They have also added a $25 athletic transportation fee per sport with a $50 individual maximum. A $50 activity fee for band, choir, dance and scholastic bowl has also been added. Instructional fees for school registration have been increased across the board, along with a 10 cent increase in lunch prices.
