The Stormwater Coordinator at the University of Illinois is seeking artists to help educate people about local waterways by painting murals on storm drains.
Eliana Brown said the project's theme is stormwater management to encourage keeping creeks pollution-free. She added that much of the stormwater in
Champaign-Urbana drains into Boneyard Creek, which eventually leads to the Vermilion River System, then on to the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers and all the way down to the Gulf of Mexico.
Brown added that the only thing that should be going into storm drains is rainwater. She said 12 to 13 artists will be needed to paint the drains throughout Champaign-Urbana.
Brown says the deadline for artists to apply is this Saturday, Aug. 10. She said artists will get to work in the beginning of September so people can enjoy the artwork through the fall.
