URBANA — Area residents can learn about serving as an election judge at three recruitment events this month:
— 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 13 at the Rantoul Public Library, 106 W. Flessner Avenue, Rantoul.
— 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 15 at the Tolono Public Library, 111 E. Main St., Tolono.
— 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 29 at the St. Joseph Township-Swearingen Memorial Library, 201 N. Third St., St. Joseph.
The county clerk's office provides free training for the election judges, who are paid $120 each per election.
Election judges must be registered to vote in Champaign County, be proficient in English, attend election judge training, not be a candidate for office and not serve as a precinct committeeman.
Champaign County Clerk Gordy Hulten said people will have an opportunity to register to vote at all three judge recruitment events. Persons interested in registering to vote should bring two forms of identification, including one with their current address in Champaign County.
"For each election, we use between 300 and 550 election judges in 100 different polling places," Hulten said in a written release. "We are hoping to meet interested members of the community and share information about the qualifications and responsibilities of election judges and answer any questions folks may have about serving."
