URBANA — A Champaign man who failed to show up in January to begin a prison sentence for a drug conviction has been charged with another drug offense.
Jonte L. Jones, 31, who listed as address in the 0-100 block of East Beardsley Avenue, was charged Tuesday with two felony counts alleging that on Aug. 9 and 13, he had less than a gram of cocaine for sale within 1,000 feet of Weaver Park, located on East Main Street at Smith Road in Urbana.
Jones had pleaded guilty in January to possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance in connection with a May 9, 2012, sale of crack cocaine at the corner of Florida Avenue and Philo Road in Urbana, within 1,000 feet of Crestview Park.
Jones was sentenced to five years in prison but Judge Tom Difanis gave him almost three weeks of freedom to get his affairs in order before reporting to begin his sentence. When he didn't show up as ordered on Jan. 23, Difanis issued a warrant for Jones' arrest.
If convicted of the August charges, Jones could face up to 30 years in prison and would have to serve that sentence after he completes his sentence for the earlier drug conviction.
Judge Richard Klaus ordered that Jones be sent to the Department of Corrections to begin his sentence while he's awaiting trial on the more recent charges. His next court date on those is Oct. 15.
