Beautiful weather, if you like it on the chilly side. Seriously though, it is beautiful, but 47 degrees in August? I'd rather have that later on, like December and January. For now, 70 to 80 would be just fine with me. Aren't you glad I don't control the weather?
I seriously think I'll replace our screen door with a storm door. That way I can still have the inside door open and have the sunshine without the chilly breeze.
I finally had some corn to put in the freezer. This cool weather also slows down the corn production. I don't think I'll get any tomatoes to can. I really did want to make some salsa. Oh well; tomatoes aren't good for my rheumatoid arthritis.
We've eaten a lot of fresh peaches. Grandson Lucas got some for me at the produce auction. I put those in the freezer. I tried something. I don't know how well it will work, but to make those more arthritis-friendly, I poured pineapple juice on them, hopefully to keep them from turning brown. I sweetened them with agave nectar.
Recently I had a horseshoeing appointment for Sparky. Not something I look forward to doing, but just like a car, he has to have his "tires" rotated.
One thing about going to get him shod: It gives me a chance to go to Clearview Fabric & Books. This time, I borrowed a bike from Larry Helmuth, the horseshoer, and went to Clearview while Larry was "rotating" Sparky's "tires." I really go for the books more than for fabric.
When I walked into Larry's shop, there was the cutest thing I ever saw. And no, it was not Larry! It was a miniature mule, absolutely adorable. Now, I don't expect he would appreciate being called adorable, but he is! He's black with four white stockings — very flashy. His head is a little large, and he definitely has the long mule ears. It actually looks a little oddly proportioned. But that just adds to his charm. I don't suppose he'd appreciate being called "charming" either.
That little thing can move; his little — actually tiny — feet can get across the ground with record speed.
Larrys' Lamar, 9, gave me a ride in the itty-bitty cart. I think Lamar would have liked to take me around the pond, but I was too scared. I was afraid that little thing would get a "mulish" notion and dump us in the pond!
Speaking of small, we thought maybe Yoder's Cabinets had a new employee. One of small stature. One morning, as we plodded past Yoder's on our way to work, we noticed a new, or maybe I should say different, vehicle parked on the west side of the shop where the employees park. It was a small pedal car, sort of bubble-shaped, like a Fred Flintstone-era type.
We only saw it a couple of mornings, so we don't know — did he not work out, was he too small, or ...
This past Sunday, our church was held at husband Erwin's niece, Laura and Glen Hostetler. So that brought a few relatives from other districts. Among them were nephew Rudy and Wilma Otto and family.
I was helping Laura in the kitchen getting lunch ready while the congregation was singing the last song. Wilma, Mrs. Rudy, came to the kitchen asking for scissors. Laura wanted to know what kind.
"Oh, just any kind," Wilma replied. Laura hands her kitchen shears. Wilma proceeds to whack off a hunk of hair from their 3-year-old, Jay Dean, to get rid of a wad of gum. How do you suppose it got there? Beats me!

For this week, we'll have pizza. Grilled chicken breast is really good for this recipe. If you want cheese-stuffed crust, make sure you have plenty of dough at the edges. Put cheese sticks around the edges and fold over dough.
For the crust:
2 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup milk
1/3 cup vegetable oil or lard
For the sauce:
1/3 cup sugar
3 ounces cream cheese or sour cream
1 cup ranch dressing
For the toppings:
1 medium onion, chopped
1 pound chicken, fried, cooked or grilled, cubed
1/3 pound bacon, fried and cut up
Mix together the ingredients for the crust and press onto a greased cookie sheet or 10-inch round pizza pan. Bake at 350 degrees until barely done.
Next, cream together the sugar and cream cheese (or sour cream) and add ranch dressing. Spread on crust.
Next, put chopped onions on sauce, then chopped peppers and mushrooms (if using).
Cover the other toppings with chicken and bacon.
Finally bake the whole thing at 350 degrees for 15 minutes. Top with your favorite cheese and put it in the oven again, just until cheese is melted.
