URBANA — A Rantoul teen who hit a cab driver in the mouth has been sentenced to probation.
Raymon Haugabrok, 17, whose last known address was in the 400 block of Marco Drive, pleaded guilty Tuesday to aggravated battery, just a couple of hours after a jury had been selected to hear his trial on charges of attempted armed robbery and aggravated battery.
Haugabrok admitted to Champaign County Judge Harry Clem that on March 8, while a passenger in a Green Taxi cab in Rantoul, he hit the male driver in the face, giving the man a bloody lip.
The driver told Rantoul police that he felt something in the back of his head and turned to see the passenger with his face covered and a gun in his hand. The driver grabbed the gun. The passenger then punched him in the face, got out of the cab and ran.
Police later learned it was an Airsoft pellet gun and that Haugabrok was the one with the gun.
Even though he is 17, Haugabrok was charged as an adult.
He was sentenced to two years of probation and ordered to have no contact with the victim or the cab company.
Assistant State's Attorney Scott Larson said Haugabrok had no previous criminal convictions. Larson dismissed the other count of attempted armed robbery in return for Haugabrok's plea.
