Reilly O'Toole doesn't quite have the Geico camel voice down, but he did his best impression on Thursday afternoon.
Reilly O'Toole, YouTube star?
The backup Illinois quarterback was the talk of practice on Friday afternoon after his spoof of Geico's Hump Day commercial.
The popular commercial, which features a camel walking around an office asking what day it is on Wednesday (generally referred to as hump day since it's the middle of the week), featured an Illinois twist after O'Toole's performance.
O'Toole walked around the Illinois football offices, in full uniform, during a 48-second clip asking offensive coordinator Bill Cubit, coach Tim Beckman and recruiting coordinator Alex Golesh asking them what day it is.
"I'm just waiting for Hollywood to give me a call," Cubit joked. "If they need any supporting actors out there, I'm ready to go."
Cubit gives his quarterback an exaggerated eye roll while Beckman smiles and shakes his head before Golesh deadpans, "It's Game Day, Reilly."
The idea for the spoof came from Illinois player personnel graduate assistant Nubis Padhye, who is seen near the end of the video with former Illinois linebacker Matt Sinclair, now Beckman's assistant director of player personnel and relations.
"I think it was a great idea," O'Toole said. "It was all Nubis' idea, and the film guys did a great job."
Nathan Scheelhaase, a close friend of O'Toole, is expecting big numbers on YouTube.
"I'm hoping for him to have anywhere from a million to two million views by the end of this football season," Scheelhaase said. "Nubis had talked about the commercial all during camp about the actual Geico commercial. Then he's like, 'Man, we got to make a football one.' We told Nubis (that) Reilly would be a great guy to do it and I think he came through in the clutch."
