LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Freshman Meegan Johnston’s overtime goal lifted Illinois past Louisville 5-4 on Sunday, giving Janet Rayfield’s team a split of its season-opening two-match road swing.
Five different Illini scored against the Cardinals in a much stronger offensive showing than in Friday’s 4-1 loss at No. 10 Notre Dame.
“I think I went from 52 (years old) to 62 in 90-plus minutes,“ Rayfield said. “Certainly not the way you draw it up in the locker room but we'll take the win.”
Vanessa DiBernardo had a goal and an assist in the win. Jannelle Flaws, Nicole Breece and Anastasia Medellin also scored.
Johnston converted a breakaway for the game-winner.
“It just so happened that I was in the perfect spot for the ball,” she said. “I struck it well.”
Ex-Illini fifth at Pan Am. Former Illini Morolake Akinosun placed fifth in the finals of the women’s 200 meters late Saturday night at the Pan American Junior Championships in Medellin, Colombia. The sophomore, who transferred to Texas this summer, finished in 23.76 seconds.
