CHAMPAIGN — Surgical technology students at Parkland College will demonstrate their skills in a mock operating room at a pair of open houses set for next month.
The open houses, set for Sept. 17 and Sept. 20, are intended to give those interested in the field and applying for admission to Parkland's program a look at what work as a surgical technologist is like, says Parkland spokeswoman Patty Lehn.
The two-year program has limited admission and a need for graduates, Lehn said.
Last year, the program accepted 18 students, and the students "have jobs when they graduate," she said.
Surgical technologist are formally trained to assist in operating rooms.
Parkland says its surgical technology program has been recognized as one of the top 20 elite programs in the U.S., based on exam scores of graduates.
The open houses will be held during National Surgical Technology Week from 1-3 p.m. Sept. 17 and 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 20 in Room L143 on the Parkland campus at 2400 W. Bradley Ave., C.
