URBANA — A Tolono man on probation for taking pictures of nude women in Champaign tanning salons is due back in court Sept. 10 after being arrested over the weekend.
Derek Richardson, 20, was arrested by University of Illinois police at 4:15 a.m. Saturday at an apartment building on East Armory Avenue in Champaign after he allegedly discharged several fire extinguishers in the building.
A UI police report said Richardson allegedly ran from the officer. After he was arrested, he offered to give the police officer cash if he would let him go.
Rather than file new criminal charges, the state's attorney's office on Monday filed a petition to revoke the probation that Richardson had received in September 2011 for unlawful video recording, a felony.
Richardson had initially pleaded guilty in January 2011 to taking still pictures of six different unsuspecting women as they tanned in a Champaign salon on different days in February and April 2010. (Although the charge is called video recording, it applies to still photos as well.) He was sentenced to probation but in March 2011 was arrested again for taking more photos at a Champaign tanning salon.
Judge Heidi Ladd agreed to continue Richardson on high-risk intensive probation but warned him about his behavior.
