MAHOMET — The cause of a late Wednesday afternoon fire north of Mahomet remained under investigation on Wednesday night.
Nobody was reported hurt.
According to a Cornbelt Fire Department report, firefighters were called to a fire at a two-story home at 435 County Road 2425 N at about 5:35 p.m. Wednesday.
Firefighters from the Bondville, Seymour and Sangamon Valley fire departments provided mutual aid.
When firefighters arrived at the scene, they found smoke coming out of the northwest corner of the house.
Cornbelt spokesman Chad Hoffman said firefighters found the source of the fire by following the smoke.
Hoffman said it appeared that the fire may have started in the attic.
Firefighters had the fire under control by 7 p.m. and left the scene by 9:15 p.m., but investigators continued to look into the cause of the fire on Wednesday night.
Hoffman said at least one person safely escaped from the house and remained at the scene by the time firefighters arrived.
Hoffman estimated total damage to the house at $20,000.
