Good Neighbor Day in the Champaign-Urbana area Wednesday has generated more than 1,200 pounds of food donations for a local shelter.
The Blossom Basket Florist and WDWS-WHMS-WKIO teamed up to hand out 8,000 free roses. The motivation behind the roses was to keep one for yourself and hand out the rest to others.
Non-perishable food items were collected at the same time for the food pantry at the Times Center Men's Shelter, located in downtown Champaign.
One of the event's organizers, Brittany Frost, said more than $350 were also donated to help the Times Center feed the community's hungry people.
Frost said the food drive allows the community to give back after sharing the roses.
The roses were handed out at the WDWS-WHMS-WKIO radio center, at the two Blossom Basket Florist shops and at Busey Bank.
