n At Charleston. Danville’s JOHNNY LEVERENZ won the boys’ race and MERCEDES ELLIOTT was third in the girls’ race. HANNAH WRIGHT was fourth overall as Champaign Central placed second in the girls’ race.
n Carterville 36, St. Joseph-Ogden 35. Jake Stewart returned a punt for a touchdown with 1 minute, 38 seconds left to put the Spartans ahead 35-28. But Carterville responded, scoring with 28 seconds left and cashing in on quarterback Michael Aschemann’s two-point conversion for the home win in a matchup of state-ranked Class 3A teams. AUSTIN HEDRICK’s 20-yard run midway through the fourth quarter gave SJ-O a 28-20 lead. A touchdown pass by Aschemann tied it up, setting up the frantic final minutes.
Hedrick led the Spartans with 98 yards rushing and three touchdowns. ELI OLTEAN completed 12 of 20 passes for 257 yards and a touchdown, hooking up with six different receivers. BRADY DEPRATT had four catches for 100 yards and also made 10 solo tackles. RYAN KOSS also had 10 solo tackles.
n Carthage Illini West 46, Villa Grove/Heritage 0. The Blue Devils fell to 1-1 with the nonconference road loss.
n Central 1, Bradley-Bourbonnais 0. Feli Keti scored in the first half off a pass from Emmanuel Komba to lift the host Maroons, who got four saves from GAVIN SCHRADER.
n Centennial 4, Mattoon 0. Arod Mor scored twice and Diamond Williams and Nathaniel Hinds each had two assists as the Chargers won on the road. “The boys have worked very hard the past week, and I’m very proud of their teamwork and team play (Saturday),” Centennial coach Andrew Peralta said. Oscar AlmarAz had the shutout for Centennial (2-1).
n Uni High 3, Monticello 1. At Urbana, PETER IVANOV scored twice and had an assist for the Illineks. LUKE HANSELMAN scored in the loss.
n SVC tournament. St. Joseph-Ogden beat Watseka on penalty kicks for second place. Watseka’s Hugo Solorzano sent the match into overtime on a late penalty kick. Austin Baker scored early for the Spartans.
n Urbana tournament. Gesi Muharremi scored twice and Saul Downie had a goal
and an assist as Urbana beat Geneseo 3-0 en route to a 3-0 finish and first place at its own tournament. The Tigers also beat Mahomet-Seymour 5-0 on goals by Muharremi, Daniel Leal, Joshua Hogan, Patrick Shea and David Anderson. Downie and Anderson each had two assists.
M-S lost to Peoria Christian 3-1 despite a JOSH BROOKS goal.
n Blue Ridge 7, Danville 0. DYLAN GRAMMER had a goal and an assist and BLAYNE ZEIGLER made two saves for the Knights.
n At Champaign. BRIE BIRKEY (1-meter diving) and ASHLEIGH FORREST (500 freestyle) won events for Uni High against Olympia.
n At Edwardsville. Competing in a field of 32 teams, Danville placed third at the Heather Bradshaw Memorial. The Vikings, who lost to St. Joseph (Mo.) in the semifinals, bounced back to beat Morton 7-0 in the third-place match.
n At Champaign. CLARE STANHOPE, KELLY WRIGHT and BRENDA GONZALES each went 2-0 in singles as Champaign Central beat Rantoul 7-2 and Decatur MacArthur 5-4.
n Centennial tournament. In Champaign, St. Thomas More advanced to the championship match before losing to Nazareth Academy 25-7, 25-13. Lexi Wallen had 59 kills, Tori McCoy had 37 and Courtney Wax 24. Katie Gillette had 57 digs. Wallen and McCoy were named all-tournament.
Centennial, led by all-tourney selections Miaya Peacock and Kelly Braghini, finished third by beating Chicago Whitney Young 25-15, 25-20. The Chargers lost to Nazareth in the semifinals.
Champaign Central’s Dana Westfield also made the all-tourney team.
Mahomet-Seymour went 3-2. Leading the way: Cortney Bohn (32 kills), Tori Veldman (29 kills), Mason Moore (90 assists) and Sirena Woo (42 digs).
n Blue Ridge tournament. The host Knights beat Streator Woodland to win their own event, finishing 5-0 to improve to 8-0 on the season. All-tournament picks Emily Zelhart (71 assists, 34 service points) and Gabby Pearl (14 aces, 35 service points, 34 kills, eight blocks) sparked Blue Ridge. Amber Blazek added 17 aces, 41 kills and 35 digs, Taylor Builta had 41 digs and Megan Tsevelekos chipped in 35 digs.
Cerro Gordo went 5-1 and placed third. Leah Henricks and Stephanie Shook made the all-tournament team.
Other area players on the all-tourney team: Chandler Randolph (DeLand-Weldon), KrisTina Lee (Judah Christian) and EmilIe McFadden (Salt Fork).
Uni High went 1-3 as GRACE LILLY led the team in kills in three matches.
n Mattoon tournament. Brittin Boyer, an all-tournament choice, had 30 kills and Maggie Plank had 40 digs as Sullivan went 0-4.
n Casey-Westfield tournament. Lizzie Barnard had 58 kills and 47 digs as Unity went 3-2. BAILEY REIFSTACK had 106 assists and 11 aces, MADI CLARK added 51 digs and LAUREN KIRBY had 21 blocks.
