WESTVILLE — Water customers will see their rates increase starting in January for water that is used in December.
Village board members voted this week to increase the water rate by $1 per 1,000 gallons used each month, and the capital improvement by $0.50 per month.
Water customers currently pay $5.72 per 1,000 gallons of water used for each of the first 20,000 gallons used in a month, and $5.28 per 1,000 gallons of water used after that.
Water customers also pay $3 each month for the capital improvement fund, and that will increase to $3.50 starting on the January bills.
Mayor Mike Weese said that the increase was unfavorable but needed to happen to keep the water department operational. The village board last increased water rates in 2008.
Weese said many of the water lines are old, and in need of repair or replacement. The village is also purchased new water meters that are more accurate and easier to read, and is replacing older meters throughout the village with the newer ones.
