SPRINGFIELD - An elderly Logan County resident who became ill with West Nile virus last month has died, the first death from the virus in Ilinois this year, according to the state Department of Public Health.
The Macon County Health Department reported that a private lab confirmed the death. The state is still conducting West Nile virus confirmation testing for that case.
The first human case of West Nile virus has also been reported in Southern Illinois, in a Jefferson County teenager, according to IDPH.
Cooler weather won't bring protection from potential West Nile virus. People need to protect themselves from mosquito bites that can potentially cause the infection until first the hard freeze, health experts said.
West Nile has been reported in 57 Illinois counties this year.
