DANVILLE — A Chicago-area man who was wanted for raping a woman and attempting to rape another woman on Danville's east side earlier this month is behind bars.
Authorities with the U.S. Marshal's Service took Darrin Mitchell, 26, of Riverdale, into custody without incident this morning in his hometown, Danville Public Safety Director Larry Thomason said.
Thomason said Mitchell was arrested on two outstanding warrants. Mitchell was being held in the Chicago area and awaiting return to Danville.
He faces charges of aggravated criminal sexual assault and attempted criminal sexual assault in connection with two separate incidents that were reported within 15 minutes of each other on Sept. 10.
Police first were called to a 22-year-old woman's home at 7:15 a.m. She reported she was walking to a bus stop for work around 5:45 a.m. in the 1600 block of Beechwood Drive when a man jumped from a fenced area and pointed a handgun at her.
She said the man grabbed her and pushed her into a wooded area and assaulted her.
Police were then approached by a 26-year-old woman who told them a man had attempted to sexually assault her.
The woman said she had been walking in the 1600 block of Beechwood Drive around 5:30 a.m. when a man grabbed her from behind and tried to push her into a wooded area. However, a vehicle in the area scared the attacker away.
Police released Mitchell's name and photo earlier this week after his arrest warrant for aggravated criminal sexual assault was issued. An arrest warrant for attempted criminal sexual assault was issued on Sept. 13.
