URBANA — Bassist James Singleton of Astral Project, considered the leading modern jazz quartet of New Orleans, and fellow New Orleans musician Helen Gillet will perform as a duo the evening of Sept. 30 at Buvon's Wine Bar, 203 N. Vine St., U.
Admission is $15 and will include hor d'oeuvres and cake. The event will run from 6:30 to 9 p.m.
Gillet is a world-renowned musical improviser who plays cello, trumpet and other instruments, and sings. In New Orleans, she has studied and performed with members of the Sun Ra Arkestra, Astral Project, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Mardi Gras Indians and Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra.
Michael Domenici, a former host on WWOZ, New Orleans, called Gillet "one of the most creative musicians currently on the scene in New Orleans." WWOZ host Mark LaMaire noted her musicianship is "always so tasteful: at times atmospheric, other times serving the function of a bass player with metronomic rhythm and clear harmonic leadership."
Gillet tours the United States and western Europe. Her live solo performances include her playing an acoustic cello, looped electronics, a vintage E.V.I. (electronic valve instrument) trumpet and other instruments. For more, visit http://www.helengillet.com/ .
Singleton, a Springfield native, is a composer, bassist, band leader and multi-instrumentalist who has lived in New Orleans since 1977.
Besides Astral Project, which has performed locally during Midwest tours, he has performed with many other New Orleans artists, among them Professor Longhair, James Black, Aaron Neville, Milt Jackson, Eddie Harris, Lightnin' Hopkins, Gatemouth Brown, John Scofield, Wild Magnolias, Natalie Cole, Charlie Rich, Harry Connick Jr. and New Orleans natives Ellis, Branford, Wynton and Jason Marsalis.
As a member of Astral Project, Singleton's improvisation and depth led Jonathan Tabak of Offbeat magazine to write, "Not only is he one of the few bassists who can play convincing funk on the upright, his solos and compositions consistently push the envelope."
Gillet and Singleton will release their latest album, "Ferdinand," this month. For more information on him visit http://www.jamessingletonmusic.com/ .
