URBANA — A Monticello man has been charged with theft in Champaign County for allegedly stealing items from a Champaign property he was hired to work on.
Daniel Beals, 28, was arrested Wednesday for allegedly stealing tools, a riding mower and copper piping from a home in the 1200 block of North Staley Road in Champaign.
A sheriff's deputy's report said the owner of that property, an Urbana man, reported to police late last week that he had hired Beals on Sept. 1 to do work for him.
The owner said Beals and another man began the work but shortly after, failed to show up. The owner discovered the items missing from the property and contacted Beals, who promised he would bring them back.
Deputies were unable to find Beals immediately, but talked to him Tuesday after his arrest on an unrelated case in Piatt County.
He admitted to the deputy that he took several items and pawned them for money. Deputies also found a receipt from Mack's Twin City Recycling for copper that had been sold there.
Beals was charged with felony theft. If convicted, he faces penalties ranging from probation to two to five years in prison.
