With five losses in its last six matches, Illinois dropped out of the American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25  poll but not by much. The weekly rankings were announced Monday.
Ranked No. 24 last week, Illinois (5-7) was 27th overall in the latest voting, receiving the second-most points among other teams appearing on two or more ballots. Four of the Illini's five most recent losses were against Top 25 opponents.
Illinois had been ranked in each of the previous four regular-season polls this season, rising to as high as No. 14.
Eight Big Ten teams are ranked this week, led by former No. 1 Penn State, which fell to fifth after losing at home to Michigan State on Friday. Other Big Ten members in the Top 25 include No. 8 Minnesota, No. 9 Michigan State, No. 10 Nebraska, No. 12 Ohio State, No. 14 Michigan, No. 23 Wisconsin and No. 24 Purdue.
Michigan State received two first-place votes, while Penn State received one.
