The latest announced candidate for Champaign County Board agrees with the prevailing opinion that something needs to be done with the downtown jail. But he said exactly what - and whether that means an expansion at the satellite jail - is still open to debate.
The comments from Champaign Republican Tom Grey come as he announces his candidacy for county board district seven.
Grey said he's toured both jails, and said the downtown jail is simply outdated.
Grey also said that there's the potential to sell the county nursing home down the road. But for now, he says the county needs to work to improve the quality of care there.
Grey currently serves as president of Grey and Associates, which provides safety services to businesses and others. He joins two Democrats - former County Board Chairman Pius Weibel and current County Board Chairman Al Kurtz - in expressing interest in the district seven seat.
