Centennial quarterback Jimmy Fitzgerald threw two touchdowns: a 9-yard strike to Kyree Sago and a 17-yard connection to Aaron Quinn.
CHAMPAIGN — Jeremiah Peoples returned the second-half kickoff for a touchdown, lifting the Chargers into a 20-6 lead en route to their 28-13 home victory Friday night against Springfield.
Jimmy Fitzgerald threw two touchdowns for Centennial — a 9-yard strike to Kyree Sago and a 17-yard connection to Aaron Quinn.
Fitzgerald’s 2-yard TD run in the first quarter opened the scoring.
“I think we did a great job all the way around,” Chargers coach Mike McDonnell said. “We moved the ball on offense. We played great defense.”
Urbana 42, Eisenhower 16. James Cobbs led the charge for Urbana in its homecoming game.
“James Cobbs is a special player,” Tigers coach Nathan Watson said.
Cobbs finished with 136 yards rushing on 12 carries and three touchdowns. He also caught six passes for 43 yards.
“How many guys do you know that can play quarterback, running back, wide receiver and know them all in and out?”
It was a slow start for both teams. After a scoreless first quarter, the Tigers were the first to get on the board early in the second when Alex Beckman connected with Moaso Bumba for a 22-yard touchdown.
Eisenhower scored on the following possession when Cayleb Dehority found Colton Lockwood for a 37-yard touchdown.
The rest of the second quarter and all of the third belonged to Urbana, which scored four unanswered touchdowns.
Cobbs contributed two of the four on runs of 9 and 32 yards. He also had a 49-yard burst that set up another touchdown late in the third.
Urbana’s defense was dominant as well, forcing four interceptions.
“They were motivated,” Watson said. “They wanted to show people they’re better than what we’re playing right now.”
Beckman also was intercepted four times, but he was 14-of-33 passing for 133 yards and three touchdowns.
“From what I saw, it was protection,” Watson said. “The (interceptions) he threw up, he was getting drilled in the head.”
