URBANA — Heartland Gallery will host "Projects and Lost Treasures" from the photography of Robert K. O'Daniell, a recently retired 43-year veteran of The News-Gazette.
The show opens with a meet-the-artist reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the gallery, 112 W. Main St., U. The exhibit continues during regular gallery hours — 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays — through Nov. 16.
On exhibit will be photos from O'Daniell's decades of professional work. O'Daniell says the relaxed nature of his personal projects, predominantly nature and landscapes, provided a welcome counterpoint to his often-hectic professional photo shoots featuring people and sporting events.
O'Daniell grew up in the Chicago suburb of Elmhurst and moved to Champaign-Urbana to begin attending school at the University of Illinois in fall 1967. He said he bought himself a 35-millimeter camera and "enjoyed fooling around with it."
After working at the Daily Illini, he picked up skills in photomechanical engraving and soon began working weekends at The News-Gazette's photo lab. He eventually turned to full-time work.
